A SUPERB TO NEAR MINT CONDITION EXAMPLE OF THE RARE GERMAN JAGERBUSCHES MAUSER M-1871 11 mm SINGLE SHOT BOLT ACTION RIFLE. THE 11 mm RIFLED BORE IS VIRTUALLY MINT. THE BOLT ACTION IN PERFECT WORKING ORDER. BARREL, SIGHT, BANDS, AND TRIGGER GUARD ALL WITH MOST OF THE ORIGINAL BLUED FINISH WITH NO RUST OR PITTING. NO CRACKS OR WOOD LOSS TO THE STOCK. LARGE IMPERIAL STAMPS TO THE BUTT. THE BUTT PLATE WITH AS YET, UNKNOWN REGIMENT ISSUE MARK OF “T.A.G.”
NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH THE COMMON 1871/84 MAGAZINE RIFLE, OR THE 1871 STANDARD INFANTRY RIFLE. THE J.B.71 WAS MADE EXCLUSIVELY FOR THE GERMAN JAGER, RIFLE REGIMENTS WHO INSISTED BY TRADITION THAT THEIR RIFLE WAS DIFFERENT TO THE STANDARD INFANTRY RIFLE. BASED ON THE 1871 INFANTRY RIFLE, THE JB.71 WAS AROUND FIVE INCHES SHORTER, HAD TWO INSTEAD OF THREE BARREL BANDS, THE LOWER SWIVEL TO THE BUTT, NOT THE TRIGGER GUARD, AND MOST NOTABLY, A JAGER SCROLL STEEL TRIGGER GUARD INSTEAD OF THE STANDARD SMALL BRASS. MADE IN FAR FEWER NUMBERS THAN THE INFANTRY RIFLE.
OF INTEREST, THIS VERSION OF THE GERMAN 11 mm RIFLE RANGE WAS THE ONLY ONE NOT TO HAVE BEEN TAKEN OUT OF SERVICE, AND WAS STILL ON ISSUE DURING WW1. MOST OF GERMANY’S 1871/84 MAGAZINE RIFLES WERE SOLD OFF AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 19TH CENTURY WHEN DECLARED OBSOLETE. MANY STORED IN THE STATES, HENCE CAN STILL TURN UP IN MINT CONDITION. OF GERMANY’S STOCKS 11 mm M71, AND J.B.71, AT THE BEGINNING OF WW1,THE JAGER VERSION WAS PREFERED FOR ISSUE TO GERMAN LANDWEHR AND OTHER SIMILAR UNITS DURING GERMANY’S WEAPON SHORTAGES AT THE START OF THE WAR, AS ITS OVERALL SIZE WAS MORE CONVENIENT AND MORE IN-LINE WITH THE RIFLES OF THE DAY. THE J.B71 WAS ALSO THE DURING WW1, THE RIFLE MOST ON ISSUE TO GERMANY’S AFRICAN COLONIAL FORCES. NICE EXAMPLE OF THIS RARE RIFLE, AND PARTICULARLY RARE TO FIND IN THIS CONDITION.
