A UNIQUE MUSEUM QUALITY PIECE. ITSELF A RARE SET UP. A UNIQUE COMBINATION OF A VERNERS PATT COMPAS BY STEWART OF LONDON. ALONG WITH A POCKET BAROMETER BY THE SAME MAKER. THESE HAVE BEEN FITTED WITH BAYONET TYPE CATCHES AND HOLES TO JOIN TOGETHER, THEN FITTED IN THEIR OWN CUSTOM BELT POUCH. BOTH ENGRAVED TO THE BACK, “CAPT, A.C. GIRDWOOD, 5TH FUSILIERS.” SOME OF THE RUBBER RING GONE TO THE BACK OF THE COMPASS. THE HOLES FOR THE BAYONET TYPE JOINING HAVE OPENED UP, SO THEY DO NOT SIT TIGHTLY TOGETHER NOW. OTHERWISE BOTH DEVICES AND THE POUCH IN EXCELLENT UNTOUCHED CONDITION. GIRDWOOD HAD A LONG CARRIER IN THE MILITARY. COMMISSIONED IN THE NORTHUMBERLAND FUSILERS IN 1896. SAW SERVICE IN THE SUDAN AND FOUGHT AT OMDURMAN. MADE CAPTAIN IN 1900 AND SERVED IN THE BOER WAR. AWARDED THE D.S.O. MADE AMJOR IN 1915 AND SERVED THROUGHOUT WW1.
