RARE NAPOLEONIC WAR PERIOD SHIPS SIGNAL CANNON. FINELY FORMED BRONZE BARREL, 21.5 INCHES LONG IN THE CLASSIC ENGLISH STYLE. WITH ITS ORIGINAL OAK CARRIAGE. THE CARRIAGE WITH ITS TWO HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT WEDGES. ALL ORIGINAL. THE STYLE AND MANUFACTURE OF THE CARRIAGE IS THE BRITISH FORM USED 1750 – 1830, HAVING IRON STRAP WORK TO BRACE THE CROSS BEAM. CARRIAGE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION WITH NO WOODWORM. THE LAST OWNER HAD THE BARREL CLEANED AS IT HAD A THICK HEAVY PATINA, BUT IT WILL SOON START TO COLOUR DOWN AGAIN. BARREL WEIGHS 18 KILO. SHIPS OF THE LINE IN THIS PERIOD WERE EQUIPPED WITH SEVERAL SIGNAL CANNON. THEY WERE USED TO ALERT OTHER SHIPS THAT A FLAG SIGNAL WAS SOON TO BE SENT, TO ALERT HARBOUR MASTERS THAT THEIR SHIP WAS APROACHING, ETC. HANDSOME, HEAVY PIECE THAT DISPLAYS VERY WELL.
